This is my favourite web comic ever. Written and illustrated by Megan Gedris; it’s certainly amongst my biggest influences in my choice to pursue a career in comics. I came across it about three years ago, and greedily read the whole archive in a day. Looking back at it now to write this blog post, it didn’t really start life as the compelling story/amazing art combo that it has grown into. I think that’s one of the great things about long-running webcomics; they act in many ways as a progress diary of the artist, charting improvement of the artist’s ability and growth.
As you can see from these pages, Yu+Me starts life as a fairly simple teenage drama about a girl, dealing with her stepmother, bullies and being a lesbian in a Catholic school. However later the story blossoms into something surreal and unexpected- I’d like to say a lot more but I don’t want to spoil the story!
Gredis makes fantastic use of different styles and colour schemes, representing changes such as time period and setting, often going into as much detail as the interior of a building being entirely different to the world outside it.
All in all, go read this comic! Even if you’re not a teenage girl!
